OUGD603 D.S.M- The Ministry of Wonderful

My THEME : Train Operator:
Research:
UK Train Issues: www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/12/what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-british-trains/
Cost
-'A 20 mile commute into London from Woking will cost £3,268 a year. Similar distance journeys in Germany and Spain will cost just £658-£705 respectively. That is nearly four times more expensive'
-'Trains are meant to be something you can pitch up on, out of the blue and jump on with minimum hassle'
-Going by car is working out to be cheaper then trains and when cars are more convenient (for example lots of shopping) a car is going to be the better choice.
-Booking in advance however and travelling at non peak times will save you money however can be inconvenient if your journey is unexpected
.
Overcrowding
Peak Tmes
Non Peak times are empty with lots of space makes traveling more enjoyable
UK has the worst passenger to seat ratios in Europe

Train Tickets are a waste of paper/card
To tackle this issue could either return and re-use. Create them into things people want to keep. Visually appealing. Or the use of apps (apps won't work for the minority of people who do not own smartphones)

Weather
2.5 Million people use the rail network everyday
20 min commutes turn into hour long marathons

Speed
1950's increase in road usage saw passing numbers dip
Britain were pioneers in rails between 1830 &1840
Trains aren't as good as they don't have a high speed infrastructure

Research:

Concept:
The Concept was to create a train which runs throughout the night, called Night Rider.
The idea is that the train is split in half, and this is indicated between the colour of the outside. The idea is that it is a safer and cheaper option to travel at night. The main reasons people travel at night time is because of work or for a night out. This can be a problem mixing the two which is why it is important to indicate a quiet end of the train to louder end of the train.

OUGD603 Intern Magazine

21st November
Alec Dudson
Intern Magazine

Notes from the talk:
Crowdfunded first issue
Degree in sociology- Path into magazine design wasn't as straightforward as most. Had no formal training. There was reassurance of independent magazines . Magazine called Boat was a huge influence.
Did an internship in Milan with Domus which is a magazine about architecture and spent 2 months there. Didn't know how to speak italian, knew nothing about architecture. Thought that it would be a nightmare however found it really eye opening. Came back to UK and moved to London. 7 Months internship with Boat magazine which was unpaid. Purpose of Boat magazine that he believed in, Each issue goes to different cities. Athens in 2012. Olympic park ghost town- No one uses it. Just after riots. After 9 months internship decided to make his own publication. That engages in the realities of the workforce it deserves. In terms of quality of work may not be finished product. Tabloid has 12 pages which was lead by KICKSTARTER. The great thing about crowd funding 'Opportunity is there to keep complete control over your project. No investors interfering'
Alec Pledged for £5,500 got back £7,115 with 347 backers. Design tinted stuff that wrote about intern mag when it was beginning. The independent New York, Domus, Dezeen, fvf, Nicca Vice, PSFK.

Issue 1- Copper foiled sept last year, GFK paper- Very expensive. Distributed it himself, clear vision of why stores it would sell best at. Shipping was very expensive.

Simple strip back look. Important that the design doesn't take away the respect of the artists work. Uses sponsorships rather then advertisements which meant that Intern designed them so they weren't an interfering with the aesthetics of the magazine. Fashion images used with crisp typography.

BRIEF: In groups design a concept of an independent magazine
In my group : Laura, Grace, Adam, Ant and Me
Planning:
Concept-Topics:
Theatre magazine
Coast Towns
Regional towns
Chairs-Furniture-Lights
People on the Street-Street Fashion-Homeless-Elderly- Young- All different backgrounds
                                   -Travel Magazine
Print Processes/ Production
Pastries
Children Magazine- Pop up- Independent writers short stories-Child Storires-Themed magazines-Interviews children from different cultures, race, religion, multi cultural- Pull out posters

From this list of potential topics we decided to do the Children Magazine idea, as we felt that the market for independent magazines was very small, if any at all.

Audience:
Age 6-12 years
Parents would be buying so would need to appeal to parents

Aesthetic:
Colourful, Illustrative, non formal, silly, Illustrative, no photography. Flip book

Strategy-Kickstarter
Percentage for example (£1) of every sale goes to a charity. Each week the magazine promotes a different children charity.

Lifespan
Bi-Monthly- Every 2 Months

Progression
Themes through each other imagery the spine that when collected together makes an image.

Magazine
-We are lightbulb. Lightbulb is designed for children between the ages of 6-12 years old. We are bi-monthly with a focus on commissioning independent writers to write short stories, fictional stories based on fact and illustrators Each magazine will be themed. For our first issue it is about space.
Percentage of the proceeds of each sale will go to dedicated children's charity which will change each magazine, with there logo/advert in the mag
Advertisements will be related to the theme so for example national space museum and children's activities
Aesthetics on the spine each publication will make up an image so they are collectors items.
Above is the sort of idea we would like to use for our magazine.

Below are the group planning sheets:

Grace worked on the Title/ Logo for the magazine. We decided on the name lightbulb as a sign that loosely links with the magazine being educational without saying educational.
We decided that the best design was the full colour block, however depending on the background of the issue would depend on the colour used either white or black.

We decided on a wholly illustrated aesthetic. These images from 'Space Race' from Nobrow were exactly the kind of look we wanted to go for. We decided with some help from Alec that our first issuse would be about Space as it is a topical subject due to the recent comet landing.

Laura worked primarily on the front cover with input from the rest of the group.

I was really pleased with the final product. I thought that as a group we had come up with a solid idea and concept which if we were to continue to make the rest of the magazine it would be rather successful.

(Info from Grace's Blog) :

Finally, we had to present our ideas to the rest of the group with the help of the pictures above. Grace led the presentation and explained most of the main points. Sam Cook thought that our chosen age range of 6-12 might be a bit broad as the look we had gone for might not appeal to 6 year olds, and if we were to do it we might have to separate the age group to make more age appropriate magazines.

Grace explained our Kickstarter idea (using crowd funding to finance the start up of the magazine) - we would create an animation of a rocket taking off from earth and travelling through the solar system, with a voice explaining the concept of the magazine to adults. Alec said that it was really important that we aimed the Kickstarter to adults, as they would be the ones backing the idea and buying the magazine for their children. The video idea would be eye catching to adults if it was well animated and kept with the aesthetic of the magazine.

After this we as a group we had a small chat about perhaps collaborating together to create the rest of this issue, which would be incredible because as a group we worked really well together to create what in my opinion is a really strong interesting front cover.

OUGD603 Dr. ME Workshop

20th October

Two designers called Ryan and Eddie From the Dr. Me studio in Manchester came into college today they are a multi-disciplinary studio. The reason they call themselves a multi-disciplinary studio is because they think that if they call themselves 'Graphic designs' it limits what type of clients they receive as many people won't understand what they can do if they limit themselves to just Graphic designers. Ryan and Eddie met at uni and when they graduated they set up there own studio almost immediately as a collaboration. They told us that they do a lot of Record sleeves, Poster art and they make sure they have time to take part in self directed work. They focus there time working in the music sector. As a collaboration they prefer to make things by hand rather then rely on computer software. They advised us that its so important to keep in touch with clients after we have completed the work and building that relationship is essential, if they need any more work.

As a collaboration they are currently taking part in a 365 days of collage project where they make a collage everyday and sell it online for £10. They like the idea that it is free to do whatever they want keeping them creative but also sometimes they feed into other projects.

Questions and Answers which were asked.
-Where do you source your imagery from?
Cut out of magazines, never off the internet as it makes it seem more hand made.

They both spent time in New York with a designer called Mike Perry whom they learnt a lot from.

-Why did you leave New York?
Visa purposes, you can only stay in New York for 90 days on a non working visa

-How do you approach projects?
As cliche as it sounds looking around, If you see a pattern  on the wall then take a photo of it, it might come in handy at a later date. As we work in music taking something from the sounds is vital especially for record sleeve design.

-Did you collaborate at uni?
No, we did majority of our uni projects separately, as one of them prefers working with paint whilst the others passion is collage.

-Is there any other type of design you don't like?
Re-branding, going straight to the computer is literally the worst. Always start in the analogue and move into the digital.

-Do you do any work not in the music sector?
Yes, Elephant Magazin e, Manchester international festival asked us to design a stop motion graphics but they prefer to work in the music sector.

-Do you have a system when  collaborating ?
Its quite organic and natural, they tend to do there own thing but always asks each others opinion, then when they come together they have more options for there client . They have conversations about the brief, working out how they are going to interpret it etc. If they client decides they like design 1 and 5 for example, and one belongs to Eddie then the other design was done by Ryan they decide to merge the two together.

- Would you ever do any work for free?
Trust your gut when it comes to money, Just because a project has no money doesn't mean its going to be a horrible job as there might be loads of money offered for one brief but it could be a terrible brief. for example if u get a brief to design cigarettes packaging do you really want to be known for designing cigarettes.

-Why are you called Dr. Me?
Anagram, but we do also use scalpels a lot. Thinking about a name is really important but if u choose to do something funny then sometimes u might look a bit daft.

-Have you changed much from being a student to a real designer?
Forget about being a student straight away, start making contacts straight away. Still learning how to be a real person. Get your head in the right place straight away. Getting a studio straight away helps.good place to go for 7+ hours then can leave your work behind.

- Do you have an hourly rate, how do you charge?
Project charge, ask client what the budget is, how many days will it take ? 3 days i think £1000 if they say that is too much then u need to compromise and come to some sort of agreement, but it depends on the brief.

After the meeting with them, they then briefed us on 3 projects

A Day in the life of Dr. Me

They put us in a collaboration so I was working with Roxxie.

Brief 001

Create a vinyl cover from the email below
"we're gonna be releasing a limited edition 12" of a mix evian christ made last year called duga-3...

We were discussing artwork concepts and josh wondered if there was any way you could graphically represent the 10hz tapping sound that makes up the digs-3 transmission?

Important to mention right now is that we don't have  lot of time to do this, as this release is intended for record store day and they have super tight deadlines, so we need this by the end of today?

Dimensions 12"x12"

So to start of with we listened to the songs and discussed with each other our first thoughts and what the song reminded us off:

Dramatic
Trippy
Hypnotic
Kalaidascopes
Wind Chimes
Screechy
Busy
Circular
Ambient
Underwater
Tapping---10hz
Motorway-Traffic-Tunnels

We then researched to find out what Duga-3 was:
Russian steel yard with the nickname Russian WOODPECKER, Radio waves. Visually the structure was busy and very linear.

Imagery we used:

Using the idea that it was called the russian woodpecker I put forward the idea of using the woodpecker and the use of lots of lines. So we then printed these images off.

This is then what I started doing :

I wanted to build the woodpecker up of loads of lines, that replicated the Duga-3

The woodpecker replicates the the structure and it is holding the straight lines which represent the 10 hz tapping noise coming away from it.

I don't have Roxxies development however she used the same woodpecker then rotated it around a certain point to signify that there would be loads of lines crossing over like the duga 3 but also in a circle to represent the above image where the aerial view is a circle.

This was the final outcome:
Dr.Me advised us that we should change lines from black to white and then put it on a black background. It also reminds me of a speaker which goes well as its music.
