The Brief:
After designing The Backrooms Menu, earlier in the year, I was asked to produce an online brochure/pdf file which would highlight and promote the venue for sales purposes. Such as private parties, venue hire and also table hire. It was so the customer can read through and be filled in with knowledge without having to get in contact. Supposed to be easier for the customer. Not only that to produce an online brochure for info about cocktail master classes.
I went over the menu design I had done and also the research and because it was for the same thing and quite similar i didn't feel the need to have to research too thoroughly for style ideas.
Below Is the issuu files of what I had done. When It gets uploaded to there site they will use it as a PDF file.

OUGD603- Secret 7
I entered the Secret 7 Competition as a quick brief to do. However I wasn't a fan of many of the songs so It made it quite difficult. I decided to go for the Diana Ross and The supremes-Reflections.
I started off with listening to the songs and researching the lyrics. I didn't want to spend too much time researching this brief:
The lyrics:
Through the mirror of my mind
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me
Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me
Oh, I'm all alone now
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That's a distorted reality
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That's a distorted reality
Hapiness you took from me
And left me alone
With only memories
And left me alone
With only memories
Through the mirror of my mind
Through these tears that I'm crying
Reflects a hurt I can't control
'Cause although you're gone
I keep holding on
To the happy times
Oh, when you were mine
Through these tears that I'm crying
Reflects a hurt I can't control
'Cause although you're gone
I keep holding on
To the happy times
Oh, when you were mine
As I peer through the window
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterdays
And all the love I gave all in vain
(All the love) All the love
That I've waisted
(All the tears) All the tears
That I've taisted
All in vain
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterdays
And all the love I gave all in vain
(All the love) All the love
That I've waisted
(All the tears) All the tears
That I've taisted
All in vain
Through the hollow of my tears
I see a dream that's lost
From the hurt
That you have caused
I see a dream that's lost
From the hurt
That you have caused
Everywhere I turn
Seems like everything I see
Reflects the love that used to be
Seems like everything I see
Reflects the love that used to be
In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust
After all the nights
I sat alone and wept
Just a handful of promisses
Are all that's left of loving you
I sat alone and wept
Just a handful of promisses
Are all that's left of loving you
Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me
In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust..
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust..
Below are the lyrics I used to visualise.
Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me
I wanted to show a sort of reflected image of where it is sunny and happy with her man, and then below is the same image just in darkness and on her own.
I don't like this piece of work at all. I think had I given my self more time the artwork could have been so much more better and refined. I think the concept works and visually it matches however the style in which it has been done isn't too great at all.

OUGD603 D.S.M- The Ministry of Wonderful
My THEME : Train Operator:
Research:
UK Train Issues: www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/12/what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-british-trains/
Cost
-'A 20 mile commute into London from Woking will cost £3,268 a year. Similar distance journeys in Germany and Spain will cost just £658-£705 respectively. That is nearly four times more expensive'
-'Trains are meant to be something you can pitch up on, out of the blue and jump on with minimum hassle'
-Going by car is working out to be cheaper then trains and when cars are more convenient (for example lots of shopping) a car is going to be the better choice.
-Booking in advance however and travelling at non peak times will save you money however can be inconvenient if your journey is unexpected
.
Overcrowding
Peak Tmes
Non Peak times are empty with lots of space makes traveling more enjoyable
UK has the worst passenger to seat ratios in Europe
Train Tickets are a waste of paper/card
To tackle this issue could either return and re-use. Create them into things people want to keep. Visually appealing. Or the use of apps (apps won't work for the minority of people who do not own smartphones)
Weather
2.5 Million people use the rail network everyday
20 min commutes turn into hour long marathons
Speed
1950's increase in road usage saw passing numbers dip
Britain were pioneers in rails between 1830 &1840
Trains aren't as good as they don't have a high speed infrastructure
Research:
Concept:
The Concept was to create a train which runs throughout the night, called Night Rider.
The idea is that the train is split in half, and this is indicated between the colour of the outside. The idea is that it is a safer and cheaper option to travel at night. The main reasons people travel at night time is because of work or for a night out. This can be a problem mixing the two which is why it is important to indicate a quiet end of the train to louder end of the train.

OUGD603 Intern Magazine

Alec Dudson
Intern Magazine
Notes from the talk:
Crowdfunded first issue
Degree in sociology- Path into magazine design wasn't as straightforward as most. Had no formal training. There was reassurance of independent magazines . Magazine called Boat was a huge influence.
Did an internship in Milan with Domus which is a magazine about architecture and spent 2 months there. Didn't know how to speak italian, knew nothing about architecture. Thought that it would be a nightmare however found it really eye opening. Came back to UK and moved to London. 7 Months internship with Boat magazine which was unpaid. Purpose of Boat magazine that he believed in, Each issue goes to different cities. Athens in 2012. Olympic park ghost town- No one uses it. Just after riots. After 9 months internship decided to make his own publication. That engages in the realities of the workforce it deserves. In terms of quality of work may not be finished product. Tabloid has 12 pages which was lead by KICKSTARTER. The great thing about crowd funding 'Opportunity is there to keep complete control over your project. No investors interfering'
Alec Pledged for £5,500 got back £7,115 with 347 backers. Design tinted stuff that wrote about intern mag when it was beginning. The independent New York, Domus, Dezeen, fvf, Nicca Vice, PSFK.
Issue 1- Copper foiled sept last year, GFK paper- Very expensive. Distributed it himself, clear vision of why stores it would sell best at. Shipping was very expensive.
Simple strip back look. Important that the design doesn't take away the respect of the artists work. Uses sponsorships rather then advertisements which meant that Intern designed them so they weren't an interfering with the aesthetics of the magazine. Fashion images used with crisp typography.

BRIEF: In groups design a concept of an independent magazine
In my group : Laura, Grace, Adam, Ant and Me
Planning:
Concept-Topics:
Theatre magazine
Coast Towns
Regional towns
Chairs-Furniture-Lights
People on the Street-Street Fashion-Homeless-Elderly- Young- All different backgrounds
-Travel Magazine
Print Processes/ Production
Pastries
Children Magazine- Pop up- Independent writers short stories-Child Storires-Themed magazines-Interviews children from different cultures, race, religion, multi cultural- Pull out posters
From this list of potential topics we decided to do the Children Magazine idea, as we felt that the market for independent magazines was very small, if any at all.
Audience:
Age 6-12 years
Parents would be buying so would need to appeal to parents
Aesthetic:
Colourful, Illustrative, non formal, silly, Illustrative, no photography. Flip book
Strategy-Kickstarter
Percentage for example (£1) of every sale goes to a charity. Each week the magazine promotes a different children charity.
Lifespan
Bi-Monthly- Every 2 Months
Progression
Themes through each other imagery the spine that when collected together makes an image.
Magazine
-We are lightbulb. Lightbulb is designed for children between the ages of 6-12 years old. We are bi-monthly with a focus on commissioning independent writers to write short stories, fictional stories based on fact and illustrators Each magazine will be themed. For our first issue it is about space.
Percentage of the proceeds of each sale will go to dedicated children's charity which will change each magazine, with there logo/advert in the mag
Advertisements will be related to the theme so for example national space museum and children's activities
Aesthetics on the spine each publication will make up an image so they are collectors items.

Above is the sort of idea we would like to use for our magazine.
Below are the group planning sheets:
Grace worked on the Title/ Logo for the magazine. We decided on the name lightbulb as a sign that loosely links with the magazine being educational without saying educational.
We decided that the best design was the full colour block, however depending on the background of the issue would depend on the colour used either white or black.
We decided on a wholly illustrated aesthetic. These images from 'Space Race' from Nobrow were exactly the kind of look we wanted to go for. We decided with some help from Alec that our first issuse would be about Space as it is a topical subject due to the recent comet landing.
Laura worked primarily on the front cover with input from the rest of the group.
I was really pleased with the final product. I thought that as a group we had come up with a solid idea and concept which if we were to continue to make the rest of the magazine it would be rather successful.
(Info from Grace's Blog) :
Finally, we had to present our ideas to the rest of the group with the help of the pictures above. Grace led the presentation and explained most of the main points. Sam Cook thought that our chosen age range of 6-12 might be a bit broad as the look we had gone for might not appeal to 6 year olds, and if we were to do it we might have to separate the age group to make more age appropriate magazines.
Grace explained our Kickstarter idea (using crowd funding to finance the start up of the magazine) - we would create an animation of a rocket taking off from earth and travelling through the solar system, with a voice explaining the concept of the magazine to adults. Alec said that it was really important that we aimed the Kickstarter to adults, as they would be the ones backing the idea and buying the magazine for their children. The video idea would be eye catching to adults if it was well animated and kept with the aesthetic of the magazine.
After this we as a group we had a small chat about perhaps collaborating together to create the rest of this issue, which would be incredible because as a group we worked really well together to create what in my opinion is a really strong interesting front cover.

Logo Development:
From the above designs, I decided to choose the below images.
Originally the above images were my logo. I had a crit and showed the progression of these, and even though in the crit is was said that yes they defiantly looked vintage, it looked too dated. If i was going to go with this style then it was suggested that I should get rid of the straight lines and add more curls or swirls.
I bought a tablet and stylus so I decided to experiment with hand drawn logos as i
I felt that to would fit the brief of a quant vintage tea room. Below are some examples.
I decided to take a new route mixing a quite digital style with a hand drawn feel. However I felt that it looked too much and overly done. I felt like it looked to retro for the style that I had in mind.
Below is how I came to my final logo design. I decided to draw out the word 'Vintea' then incorporated the hand drawn imagery.
Below is the final Logo:
This was the sketch that I had done that was most related to the final logo design

Promotional Poster:
Below is the sketch I drew that is used on the background of the promotional material. I scanned it into the computer then duplicated, rotated and reflected, so it was symmetrical on both sides. I then went on to lower the opacity so it is faded into the background.
