|
After I had done research ion different designs of publications, I knew that for my publication I wanted it to be primarily picture based Like the image above. I knew as well that I wanted it to be majority in black and white. I spoke with a tutor during a crit about my idea and he said that it was important to try and have a theme or a concept running behind it. Wether it was an obvious theme or just a theme that you recognised. I decided to use the number 21(21st century) as my theme. I thought about 21 images but then the publication wouldn't have been substantial enough to cover the first 12 years of the 21st century. 21 events that defined that era (still not substantial enough). So i decided that my grid layout would be made up of 21 squares 3x7 and that would hold the theme. I decided that the way it was laid out would be repetitive and be a combination of full page images, either on a single page or across two. Some images would have a white border around and some would run right up to the edge.
After an informal crit with about 5 peers from my class I showed the progress I had made on this piece so far. They said that they had felt that the images being in black and white made it note emotional and kept a theme running. However in some there are coloured imagery purely because they are images from space and they wouldn't be recognisable if transferred to black and white. My peers however said that it worked quite well because It kept it subtle.
I loved the idea below of the imagery and the geometric shape. So I decided to do something similar for my back page. It will consist of all the black and white imagery used and fill the very last page as a sort of pictorial summary.
During the crit it was mentioned that I should think about foiling or screen printing the front cover. I think I will experiment with black foil on different stocks to make it more striking.
As the publication has 50 pages to it I will have to perfect bind although I will practice with other sewing techniques but that will all depend on what I decide to do for the front cover and the printing processI follow. If i was to foil the front cover I would use perfect bind as it keeps it looking clean and tidy.
Below is the final publication on Issuu:
